Breast implant replacement requires an individual cost calculation – factors such as the duration of the operation, type of anesthesia, necessary capsulectomy and desired implant shape all play a role. Typically, an implant replacement is more complex than a breast augmentation with implants.

Modern silicone implants are “long-term”, but not lifelong products. Replacement is recommended if complications develop – e.g. capsular fibrosis, rupture, visible wrinkling or a desire for a different size. Manufacturers often recommend replacing older models after 10-15 years, while newer cohesive gel implants usually only require surgery if there are problems or changes in aesthetics. Regular ultrasound or MRI checks (from year 5, then every 2 years) help to detect silent ruptures at an early stage.

Immediately after the implant change, the following applies: elevate the upper body, wear a special bra and chest strap consistently 24 hours a day for 4-6 weeks to minimize swelling and stabilize the implant pockets. Gentle everyday activities are permitted after 48 hours; heavy lifting > 5 kg, sport and overhead movements should be avoided until week 6. Showering is possible from day 1, bathing and sauna only after complete wound healing. Nicotine, alcohol and blood-thinning medication hinder regeneration and should be discontinued. Contact the surgeon immediately in the event of redness, fever or stabbing pain.

Yes – changing breast implants is technically more demanding because scar capsules, tissue loosening or positional shifts have to be corrected. Absolute: When changing implants, you can switch to a smaller volume or remove the implants completely (explantation).
