What is a Breast Reduction?

The breast reduction, medically referred to as mammareduction plastic surgery, is a surgical procedure in which excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are removed. The goal is a smaller, firmer breast shape that suits your stature – with a symmetrical, harmonious appearance and improved well-being.

The procedure is often chosen for functional reasons: back pain, skin irritations under the breast, postural problems, and emotional burden are common triggers.

Frequently Asked Questions about Breast Reduction

What is the Required Weight for a Breast Reduction?

A fixed body weight is not a prerequisite for a breast reduction – the Body Mass Index (BMI) and medical indication are crucial. A BMI in the normal range (under 30) generally improves surgical conditions and healing. In cases of severe overweight, it is often recommended to first reduce weight to achieve a stable surgical outcome. During the individual consultation, it will be assessed whether a breast reduction is currently advisable and medically justifiable.

How much does a breast reduction cost?

The costs of breast reduction depend on several factors: the scope of the surgery, skin elasticity, the type of anesthesia, the clinic standard, and aftercare. Quality is the priority here: experienced specialists in plastic and aesthetic surgery, modern surgical techniques, and intensive aftercare are crucial for a safe result.

At BONITAS, individual pricing is determined after a personal examination and consultation. Prices usually start at approximately €8,000 (depending on the initial findings and complexity).

When is a Breast Reduction Advisable?

A breast reduction is medically advisable if physical complaints such as back and neck pain, postural damage, skin irritation in the inframammary fold, or restricted mobility exist. Psychological stress can also play a role. The decisive factor is the interplay of subjective suffering, objective findings, and the desire for breast reduction. During a breast reduction, the size and shape of the breast are individually adapted to your body proportions. A specialist in plastic surgery will clarify whether the operation is medically indicated during an examination and consultation.

Cost coverage by health insurance: Medical indication

Whether health insurance covers the costs for a breast reduction depends on a medical indication and the criteria of your health insurance provider. Often, verifiable complaints (e.g., neck, shoulder, and back pain), functional limitations, recurring skin problems/inflammations, and proof that conservative measures (e.g., physiotherapy, weight reduction, special bra fitting) have not helped sufficiently are taken into account. The decision on cost coverage is usually made as part of an individual case review by the health insurance company or the Medical Service.

It is best to contact your health insurance provider directly. Please note: BONITAS is a private practice and therefore cannot bill statutory health insurance companies.

What Size Can the Breast be after Reduction?

The new breast size is planned individually – tailored to body proportion, skin condition, and personal wishes. The goal is a harmonious, functional, and aesthetic result that suits the figure and significantly alleviates discomfort. In many cases, a C or D cup size remains after the reduction – however, this varies greatly. An experienced specialist will discuss in detail beforehand what volume is advisable and realistic.

What is the consultation process like with a specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery before an operation?

During the consultation, the specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery first discusses your wishes, goals, and medical history. This is followed by a physical examination, including photo and findings documentation if necessary. Based on this, suitable treatment options are explained, including the procedure, surgical technique, scar progression, risks, alternatives, and realistic results. Finally, you will receive an individual treatment and aftercare plan as well as a transparent cost overview, and there will be time for all your questions.

Can a breast reduction be combined with a breast lift?

Yes, this is very often possible and is even frequently recommended. In a breast reduction, the breast is usually not only reduced in size but also reshaped and lifted at the same time, so the lifting effect is mostly included directly. The position of the nipple can also be adjusted to achieve a harmonious result. Whether the combination makes sense in your case depends on the initial findings, skin quality, and your wishes, and will be planned individually during the consultation. Read more about breast lifts here.

Is it still possible to breastfeed after a breast reduction?

Whether you can still breastfeed after a mammareduction is possible, but cannot be guaranteed. This depends primarily on the surgical technique, the amount of tissue removed, and whether milk ducts and nerve connections to the nipple remain intact. With a gentle incision and the preservation of a “tissue pedicle” through which the nipple remains connected to glandular tissue, the ability to breastfeed is more frequently maintained.

Important: Even though the nipple is usually repositioned, temporary or permanent changes in sensitivity can occur, which can also affect breastfeeding. If there is a desire to have children later, this should definitely be addressed during the consultation.

Where can I find results of a breast reduction?

Would you like to see breast reduction results? Understandable – but: Before-and-after photos may not be shown online in Germany, as the Therapeutic Products Advertising Act (§ 11 Para. 1 HWG) prohibits public advertising with such images for plastic surgery procedures.

To ensure you still get a realistic idea, Alejandro Marti, a specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery, will show you suitable case studies discreetly during a personal consultation appointment at the BONITAS practice in Nuremberg.
