Whether health insurance covers the costs for a breast reduction depends on a medical indication and the criteria of your health insurance provider. Often, verifiable complaints (e.g., neck, shoulder, and back pain), functional limitations, recurring skin problems/inflammations, and proof that conservative measures (e.g., physiotherapy, weight reduction, special bra fitting) have not helped sufficiently are taken into account. The decision on cost coverage is usually made as part of an individual case review by the health insurance company or the Medical Service.

Whether you can still breastfeed after a mammareduction is possible, but cannot be guaranteed. This depends primarily on the surgical technique, the amount of tissue removed, and whether milk ducts and nerve connections to the nipple remain intact. With a gentle incision and the preservation of a “tissue pedicle” through which the nipple remains connected to glandular tissue, the ability to breastfeed is more frequently maintained.

Important: Even though the nipple is usually repositioned, temporary or permanent changes in sensitivity can occur, which can also affect breastfeeding. If there is a desire to have children later, this should definitely be addressed during the consultation.
