Breast lift (mastopexy)

A breast lift (mastopexy) primarily removes excess skin and reshapes the tissue—without removing significant amounts of glandular or fatty tissue. The weight of the removed skin is usually under 100 g and generally not enough to reduce a full cup size. Many patients still feel their breasts are “smaller” after surgery because the volume sits higher and firmer again, and the special bra temporarily reduces swelling and volume in the first few weeks.

However, if genuinely less volume and a true reduction in size is desired, we are talking about a breast reduction: unlike a lift alone, this procedure specifically removes glandular and fatty tissue to make the breast noticeably lighter and reduce complaints such as back or neck pain.

And if, after healing from a lift, you still want more fullness, this can be sensibly added later—for example with implants or fat transfer.

The result of a breast lift typically remains stable for 10–15 years; however, natural tissue aging cannot be completely prevented. Factors such as major weight fluctuations, further pregnancies, smoking, or pronounced connective tissue weakness can shorten the effect. Regular bra use, sun protection, and maintaining a stable weight can help it last longer.

Possible disadvantages of a breast lift include visible scars (usually around the nipple and vertically down to the inframammary fold), temporary numbness, and general surgical risks such as bleeding, infection, or seroma. Permanent loss of nipple sensation is rare (< 1%), while mild changes in sensitivity occur in about 3%. Smoking, excess weight, and diabetes increase the risk.

For office work or light duties, patients are usually able to work again 7–10 days after a breast lift. Anyone who does heavy lifting or uses their arms above shoulder height should take a 2–3 week break to avoid tension on fresh scars. The special bra must be worn 24/7 for six weeks; sports and sauna are only allowed once your doctor has given the go-ahead.

Yes—a breast lift can often be combined as part of a “Mommy Makeover” with a tummy tuck, liposuction, or fat transfer. The advantage: only one anesthetic, one recovery process, and a harmonious overall result. However, the surgery takes longer, which slightly increases the risk of thrombosis and complications; particularly careful planning and aftercare are therefore essential.
