A secondary breast surgery, also known as breast revision, is a surgical procedure performed when a previous breast surgery has not yielded the desired result – be it aesthetically or medically.

It is a more complex form of breast surgery, as altered tissue, scar formation, or implants must already be taken into account.

Breast revision is the collective term for surgical procedures that harmonize the shape, size, or position of the breast. These include augmentation with implants or autologous fat, reduction for back pain, breast lift (mastopexy) for excess skin, implant exchange / removal, and reconstructive procedures after tumor surgery. The goal is a permanently natural appearance and – if necessary – the restoration of function. The choice of technique and scar depends on tissue strength, skin elasticity, and individual aesthetic wishes.

Before a revision procedure, professional societies recommend an interval of at least 6–12 months. During this phase, scars heal, swelling subsides, and the final result of the first operation becomes visible. Only in cases of complications such as capsular fibrosis or implant rupture may earlier action be necessary. Early revisions carry a higher risk of wound healing disorders and asymmetrical results.
